Bill Clinton has revealed that when he left office he had ‘more nightmares on what could happen’ to his country but said it’s ‘foolish wishing you can do something you can’t do anymore.’

Ross King interviewed the former US President on ITV’s Lorraine today and spoke about life after the White House and his latest novel The President’s Daughter with best-selling author James Patterson.

‘After I left office, when I had more free time, I had more nightmares thinking about what else could go wrong with our country,’ explained Bill Clinton. ‘I occasionally have them now but not so much as before.’

‘By and large, I’ve been really happy. I think it’s a foolish thing to spend a day wishing you could do something you can’t do any more. I made a promise to myself when I was president, I wouldn’t do that. It’s been an eventual 20 years since I left office, I’ve been very fortunate because under President Bush and President Obama, I’ve been given a lot of chances to help.

He continued: ‘I’m happy for President Biden because I think he’s fortunate to be serving at a time when the challenges meet his skill set.’

Speaking on his latest book being number one, author James Patterson said: ‘That’s as good as it gets,’ to which Bill Clinton added: ‘I’m really thrilled.’

‘This one is about a former president and is much more emotional because we get much more into this man as a human being,’ explained James. ‘One of the worst nightmares anyone can have whether you’re a President or a writer like me is having a loved one disappear.’

Bill continued: ‘What we illustrate here is where a former President keeps secret service protection – although nowhere near as extensive as when you’re in there.

‘But your adult children lose it and so they become attractive targets to people who are mad at something you did when you were in office.

James added: ‘This book is fiction. The President is not President Clinton and the daughter is not Chelsea or Ivanka…’

Interviewee Ross King went on to say how Bill’s wife Hilary Clinton branded the novel ‘thrilling fun – perfect for summer.’

Commenting on whether he pays attention to critics such as his wife Hillary, Bill joked: ‘I always pay attention to her criticism it’s how I survived the last 45 years.’

Ross King went on to say how the book would make the most sensational movie.

‘I think we’re about to see a script so fingers crossed,’ said author James Patterson.

When asked of his favourite President portrayal in a movie, Bill Clinton responded: ‘By far the best portrayal ever was Daniel Day Lewis’ Lincoln because he played Lincoln as an old-time politician.

‘It’s very important when you portray the president to portray him in a context where there are other actors.’

You can make Churchill centre of the action but if you look at all the really great movies with Churchill in it, you see all the other great stuff too.’
