Tim Southee ripped through England’s middle order as New Zealand made a victory charge on the fourth day at Lord’s.
After persistent rain frustratingly washed out all of Friday’s action, the tourists were eager to make up for lost time as they reduced England from 111 for two at the resumption to a precarious 140 for six.
That followed a stunning spell from Southee, who took his haul to four wickets for the match after dismissing Ollie Pope, Dan Lawrence and James Bracey in quick succession.
It came after Kyle Jamieson set the tone by getting Joe Root with the very first ball of the day.
Thanks to Rory Burns and debutant Ollie Robinson, England limped to 164 for six at lunch but are still 15 short of the follow-on mark.
