A ‘fruit nerd’ has shared his simple trick for picking the juiciest mandarins every time you shop.

Thanh Truong, a Melbourne ‘fruiterer’ who is an expert in fresh produce, said you should start by holding mandarins of roughly the same shape and size in each hand.

Using your weaker arm, he said you should feel the weight of both to determine which is heavier.

The heavier mandarin will be ‘juicier and less dry’ than the lighter one, Thanh explained in a video uploaded to his Instagram account that was republished by the ABC.

Thanh said the best time to eat mandarins is in May, the peak of the Queensland season where the majority of Australia’s mandarins are grown.

And when it comes to getting value for money, he said the best way to keep ‘mandies’ fresh is by storing them in the fridge.

He said they only keep for about a week because of their thin skin which dehydrates easily.

Thanh said it can be difficult to know what type of mandarin to choose – one with a tight, smooth exterior, or one that looks puffy and loose.

For the majority of the season which runs from April to October, he said they should taste exactly the same.

However towards the end of the season, Thanh said the puffier mandarins are more likely to be dry.

‘It’s something to look out for,’ he added.
