Demi Lovato reveals they came out as nonbinary to ‘friends and loved ones last year’

Demi Lovato opened up to pal Alok Vaid-Menon, who also identifies as nonbinary, about their personal journey coming out to friends and family.

During a sit-down interview at YouTube’s virtual Pride celebration, the 28-year-old singer said officially changing their pronouns to they/them and has been ‘so rewarding.’

‘I’m so grateful that my fans and my friends are as wonderful as they are,’  Lovato gushed.

While rocking a t-shirt with the word ‘gay’ written on it over a rainbow flag, Lovato was asked to reflect on their first Pride after coming out as nonbinary, which means they does not exclusively identify as a man or a woman.

‘It feels incredible, I just feel like I’m finally showing the world my truth, too,’ they explained. 

The two-time Grammy nominee went on to say: ‘It’s been really cool.’

Lovato also revealed they ‘actually had come out to loved ones and friends last year.’

‘This year, I made it public. I felt it was really important for me to share that with the world’ the former Disney Channel star noted. 

They continued: ‘I’ve been so open and honest with my truth to fans, I felt holding it in any longer just didn’t feel right… most people have been so wonderful and that’s the reality of coming out.’

They praised their family members and team for using their pronouns as well as the conversations it has sparked.  

They and Vaid-Menon also discussed what it means to be nonbinary and misconceptions about their gender identities.  

‘Only you get to determine what your gender is,’ Vaid-Menon, 29, stated. ‘You just don’t get to tell other people what their gender is.’ 

Lovato also looked back at their fashion over the years, including one of them wearing a skintight green leotard, which they admitted made them ‘kind of sad.’

‘I was trying so hard to be what other people wanted me to be,’ they confessed. ‘Wearing something like that made be feel sexy.’ 

Lovato added: ‘But at the same time, I know that I was trying to push my sexiness out there because it’s what people wanted of me.’

‘So, I get a little sad when I see that,’ the star reflected.

After an outfit change, which entailed changing into a sparkly black jacket and matching pants, they sang The Kind of Lover I Am. 

They concluded their set with Easy with Noah Cyrus.
