Utes take out top three spots on Australia car sales charts in June 2021

Utes take out top THREE spots on Australia car sales charts – and the Toyota HiLux ISN’T number one

  • Utes were Australia’s three bestselling cars in June for only third time in history
  • Outgoing Ford Ranger was No. 1 last month for only the fourth time since 2017
  • Toyota HiLux lost the top spot for second time this year, outsold in 4×4 stakes

Utes have taken out the top three spots on the Australia car sales charts but the Toyota HiLux for a change wasn’t the bestseller.

The Ford Ranger was number one in June for the only the fourth time since 2017 with the 4×4 versions comfortably outselling four-wheel drives HiLuxes, even though an all-new shape is coming next year.

Last month, utes claimed the top three spots for only the third time in Australian motoring history, with this feat only ever previously achieved in June 2018 and February 2019, Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries records showed.

The Ranger and HiLux were the top two sellers, reversing the usual order, with the Isuzu D-Max taking third spot.

Its 3,167 sales were almost double compared with a year earlier, surging by 92.9 per cent.

This is the best-ever result for Isuzu in Australia.

The Mitsubishi Triton was ninth but its sales of 2,240 were 17.7 per cent weaker compared with a year ago when Australia had just emerged out of a national lockdown.

The HiLux was outsold by the Ranger in June for the first time since April.

The Mazda CX-5 was Australia’s bestselling SUV with 3,018 sale, up 19.3 per cent from a year ago.

The Toyota RAV4 was Australia’s bestseller in July and August last year, the first SUV ever to reach number one.

But in June, it was seventh on the list with its sales down 5 per cent to 2,501.

The Toyota Corolla just scraped into the top ten with 2,175 sales, marking a 27.7 per cent decline compared with a year earlier.

The small hatch and sedan, which has dominated the sales charts since first going on sale in Australia in 1967, was outsold by two Korean models, the Kia Cerato (2,711 sales) and the Hyundai i30 (2,331 sales).

The Isuzu D-Max took third spot. Its 3,167 sales were almost double compared with a year earlier, surging by 92.9 per cent. This is the best-ever result for Isuzu in Australia
