UEFA football chief Zvonimir Boban lambasts Arsene Wenger over ‘absurd’ plea for World Cup to be played every two years… former Arsenal boss also under fire for criticising England penalty in Euro 2020 semi-final

  • Wenger also under fire for criticising award of England penalty in semi-final

Zvonimir Boban, UEFA’s football chief, has savaged Arsene Wenger after he pledged his support for a World Cup every two years instead of four.

The former Arsenal boss has also come under fire from the Croatian for criticising the penalty awarded to England against Denmark in the semi-final of the European Championship for a foul on Raheem Sterling.

Earlier this week, Wenger drew criticism when he backed a FIFA proposed revamp of the World Cup, claiming it was what the fans wanted.

And Boban clearly thinks very little of the idea – and Wenger’s opinion on the Euros.

‘We can only admire Wenger for what he has given to football,’ AC Milan legend Boban told Italian media.

‘(But) I find it absurd that he cannot understand that it simply cannot be done. The World Cup cannot be biennial for a thousand of reasons, from international calendars to the waiting for a ‘sacred’ event.

‘Beside this, as a FIFA manager, he commented on a penalty in the UEFA European Championship: it was inelegant and inconceivable.’
