Moment firefighters smash through wall to rescue a dog trapped behind it for FIVE DAYS – before reuniting her with her owners

Firefighters have been hailed as heroes after they smashed through a concrete wall to rescue a dog that had been trapped for five days.
Footage shared by the Cincinnati Fire Department in Ohio shows terrier mix Gertie being carried to safety by firefighter Jenny Adkins after a neighbor heard the dog’s cries from behind a wall.
Gertie went missing on July 13 and owners Connie Frick and Lynn Herman put up missing posters all over town.
Five days later neighbor Vanessa Roland heard the cries behind her garage wall and alerted Ms Frick and Ms Herman.
The dog had fallen down a gap behind the garage, and was wedged between it and another wall.

After about ten minutes, Ms Adkins was able to reach in and pull the dog to safety

With no way of lifting Gertie out, Cincinnati Fire Department cut a hole in the concrete block wall with saws and a sledgehammer.
Footage filmed by fire apparatus operator Daniel Meyer shows Ms Adkins using the sledgehammer to smash through the concrete wall.
After about ten minutes, Ms Adkins was able to reach in and pull the dog to safety, and take Gertie over to elated owners Connie and Lynn.
‘It was just so sweet, just wagging that little nub tail, and she was just so, she was so excited,’ Ms Frick told WXIX-TV.

Social media users have hailed the firefighters as heroes after the rescue.
Elizabeth Gaul wrote: ‘Big thanks for helping Gertie out of a very tight spot! Not all fire companies will come to a pet’s rescue. You rock!’
And Ron Hickey said: ‘Outstanding rescue by true heroes.’
Gertie managed to escape and ran off into nearby woods when Lynn was coming through their front door on July 13.
It is thought that the dog fell down the gap between the garage wall and another wall and had been stuck there for the entire five days she had been missing.
