Meanwhile, Aston Villa’s highly-rated young midfielder Mamadou Sylla has rejected the club’s latest contract offer. The 18-year-old earned plaudits after he impressed against Liverpool in the FA Cup back in January but is understood to hold reservations about his pathway to Villa’s first team.

The Barcelona-born youngster is aware that Villa are looking to add another central midfielder should Jack Grealish complete his £100m move to Manchester City with Villa monitoring Norwich City’s 23-year-old Todd Cantwell among others.

Aston Villa striker Keinan Davis is wanted on loan by Stoke City, while free agent goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli is among the names being considered by Villa and Chelsea.
