Australian mum is slammed for her incredibly disorganised dishwasher

Mum is slammed for her VERY disorganised dishwasher – as Aussies weigh in on the best ways to stack it for the best results

  • A mum’s disorganised dishwasher has divided hundreds on social media
  • Woman prompted discussion after she shared a snap of a messy dishwasher
  • She asked best ways to stack dishes so there’s more space for storing extra items

A mum’s extremely disorganised dishwasher has divided hundreds on social media – with many revealing how they typically load their appliance.

One woman, from Melbourne, prompted a heated discussion after she asked Australians to share their tips on exactly how they stack their dishes so there’s more space for storing extra dirty plates, bowls, pots and pans.

‘It feels as if I only use half of the dishwasher capacity even when I stack it neatly,’ she explained in a Facebook group.

She shared a picture of someone else’s dishwasher filled to the brim with muddled plates, bowls, food storage containers, cutlery and glasses so she could get an idea of how to rearrange the items.

Her post was quickly met with more than 350 comments, with many saying they were ‘horrified’ with the state of the person’s disorganised dishwasher.

‘This is what nightmares are made of,’ one woman wrote, while another added: ‘For a start, do not stack it like this.’

One woman said she always leaves gaps so she has enough room for putting spatulas and dishwasher-safe knives under the pots.

Another mum said she always arranges her items according to the sizes.

‘Figure out different sections in the dishwasher and arrange dishes and bowls by their sizes. It’s also easier for you to unload the dishwasher when it is done,’ she said.

One woman said she always leaves a gap between her dishes for a thorough wash.

‘Honestly if the dishwasher feels spacious it’s probably done right. People complain their dishwashers don’t work properly but it’s probably because they overfill theirs. I usually leave a gap between each plate for proper washing,’ she said.

While another added: ‘Well not stacking it like the photo is a great start. The neater you stack the more you should be able to fit.’

How to load your dishwasher

1. Heavy items in the bottom basket. This includes pots, pans and large crockery items like dinner plates and platters. If your dishwasher has removable tines or plate racks, use these to fit in pots or pans

2. Lighter items in the middle or top basket. This includes cups, glasses, small plates and bowls. Cups, glasses, pots, bowls or mugs with deep recesses need to be loaded on an angle so water can drain out, rather than accumulate

3. Place items with the dirty portion faced inward toward the centre of the dishwasher, as this will get more of the spray arm action

4. Make sure you don’t block the spray arms with tall items

5. Don’t place items over one another, stopping the water from the spray arms reaching the dirt

6. Adjust your tines and plate racks to make sure each item doesn’t touch other items. Contact points between items means places for water, detergent and dirt to gather.

Earlier this year, consumer expert Ashley Iredale from CHOICE revealed the ‘correct’ ways to load a dishwasher.

As a rule of thumb, he said heavy items should be placed in the bottom basket.

‘This includes pots, pans and large crockery items like dinner plates and platters. If your dishwasher has removable tines or plate racks, use these to fit in pots or pans,’ he said.

The lighter items should always be stacked in the middle or in the top basket.

‘This includes cups, glasses, small plates and bowls. Cups, glasses, pots, bowls or mugs with deep recesses need to be loaded on an angle so water can drain out, rather than accumulate,’ he said.
