Biden campaign staffers sue Trump fans who tried to run their bus off a Texas road

Biden campaign staffers are suing a group of Trump supporters who tried to run their bus off a road in Texas last year. 

Footage from the incident, which occurred on October 30, showed several pickup trucks sporting Trump flags surrounding the Biden-Harris bus in a bid to stop it from travelling down the Interstate 35 in Hays County. 

On Thursday, White House aide David Gins, former Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis, and bus driver Timothy Halloway filed a lawsuit alleging the Trump supporters ‘terrorized and menaced the driver and passengers on the Biden-Harris Campaign’s bus’.

They claim the MAGA fans violated the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 – a policy which ‘prohibits groups of people from banding together or to go in disguise upon the public highways, or upon the premises of another with the intention of violating citizens’ constitutional rights.’ 

The defendants have been named in court documents as Eliazar Cisneros, Hannah Ceh, Joeylynn Mesaros, Robert Mesaros and Dolores Park, as well as one Jane Doe and one John Doe. 

However, up to 50 vehicles sporting Trump flags were seen traveling along the highway at the time. The convoy of cars was described as a ‘Trump Train’. 

‘Those on the bus feared injury or for their lives. All suffered lingering trauma in the days and months thereafter,’ the suit states.  

‘The events of October 30 arose from a campaign of politically motivated intimidation.’

At the time, then-President Trump tweeted out his support for the drivers who tried to derail the bus. 

‘In my opinion, these patriots did nothing wrong,’ the president wrote. ‘Instead, the FBI & Justice should be investigating the terrorists, anarchists, and agitators of ANTIFA, who run around burning down our Democrat run cities and hurting our people!’ he wrote. 

Meanwhile, Republican Sen. Marco Rubio also made light of the incident, tweeting: ”I saw yesterday a video of these people in Texas. Did you see it? All the cars on the road. We love what they did,’ Rubio said. ‘But here’s the thing they don’t know. We do that in Florida every day.’

However, eyewitnesses and Biden supporters painted a much more dangerous image of the incident.  

Historian Dr Eric Cervini, who said he flew down to Texas to help with the Biden campaign’s bus tour, tweeted several videos of the confrontation, including one which showed the convoy waiting on the side of the highway before the bus passed.

‘See all these pickup trucks with Trump flags? They were sitting along I-35, waiting to ambush the Biden/Harris campaign bus as it traveled from San Antonio to Austin,’ Cervini wrote.

‘These Trump supporters, many of whom were armed, surrounded the bus on the interstate and attempted to drive it off the road.’

Cervini said he spent much of the day on the phone with 911 operators trying to ensure safe passage for the bus. 

No Biden staffers suffered physical injuries. The campaign was forced to cancel three events following he incident.
